NaviTag Technologies awarded grant for cargo tracking and security solutions under the Port Security Grant Program

Boston, MA. - June 19,2002 - NaviTag Technologies, Inc, the container cargo tracking and security alert technology company, today announced that it has been awarded an $875 thousand grant from the Port Security Grant Program to build a proof of concept prototype of their "NaviTag" tracking device.

NaviTag Technologies has designed a portable, battery powered tracking device that utilizes satellite transmissions to provide timely location and security alert information for cargo traveling globally. The NaviTag is about the size of a paperback novel, attaches to the locking bar on the exterior of a container, and transmits positional information every four hours to a secure Internet-accessible database. It has cable-mounted sensors that monitor the security of the cargo and should the container be opened while in transit, the NaviTag will immediately report the breach. Upon arrival at destination, the unit is deactivated, removed and reused on another shipment.

"The traditional tracking services today are asset management tools designed to assist the carriers in improving utilization of their equipment. Most carriers today have systems in place allowing the shipper access to this information and monitor the progress of the container that their cargo is loaded in. Unfortunately, what the shipper is receiving is event based, historical data (the container passed here yesterday) and contains little information about the security integrity," said Bob Magown-co-founder of NaviTag Technologies.

"Our goal is to place control of the tracking/security alert in the hands of the cargo owner or government agency. Their concern is not about the container but rather the cargo and supply chain. This unit would allow the NaviTag owner to attach a unit to any container anywhere in the supply chain, regardless of the carrier, and receive multiple daily updates of the location of their cargo in a standard format. This type of service would allow the shipper to manage the cargo flow and inventory levels in a more efficient and cost effective manner," continued Bob Magown.

The government’s interest is in monitoring the security integrity of containers entering U.S.Ports. U.S. Customs agents are being deployed in foreign ports to inspect and approve the loading of containers onto ships destined for the U.S. Theoretically, a NaviTag can be attached to a container after inspection or approval and monitor the security integrity while in transit. Should the container be opened, initiating an alert, they will be able to investigate the circumstances immediately and take the necessary action to avoid a disaster.

"This grant will provide the necessary funds to build the prototype and database to thoroughly field test and deploy these units to the container shipping market, improving the security of our ports and population," said Jim Galley - co-founder of NaviTag technologies.
